Congressmembers Receive “A” Report Cards

200x133.jpgDid your Congressmember receive a report card worthy of bringing home to hang on his or her refrigerator? The members of Congress who attended a DMI press conference this morning certainly did. Several attendees joked that their middle-class report card was the best grade they'd ever received. "There might be people here for whom this is their first A+, and I think I'm in that group," Senator Sheldon Whitehouse joked. "If anyone else is feeling the same then welcome aboard." Representative Tim Walz said that he felt his grade represented the work he had been doing for his middle-class constituents. "This is exactly why I was sent to Congress," he said. "I can tell you that as a public school teacher this is a proud grade."

This morning DMI hosted a press conference and reception in D.C. for the members of Congress who received As for their middle class votes during 2007. The grades were based on whether the Congressmembers' votes aligned with the interests of the current and aspiring middle class on key legislation. Members of Congress who spoke at the event spoke movingly of their commitment to their middle-class constituents. "We're here to build the great American middle class, which ultimately is the foundation for our strength and for our freedom," said Senator Whitehouse.
