After graduating from Columbia Law School in 2005, Maggie Williams received a NYC Social Justice Fellowship to start the Voter Enfranchisement Project (VEP) at The Bronx Defenders. VEP is committed to increasing the civic participation of individuals who have criminal justice involvement and combating the effects of felon disenfranchisement laws in the South Bronx, New York City, and nationwide. VEP strengthens electoral participation of communities that are disproportionately impacted by the criminal justice system by dispelling myths surrounding felon disenfranchisement laws, assisting individuals in navigating the electoral process, and advocating for policy changes in election administration. VEP collaborates with organizations working on felon disenfranchisement issues in a number of states and is expanding local efforts in the Bronx and New York City. Most recently, VEP has launched the Better Ballots: 2006 New York Voter Education Guide to help voters hold elected officials accountable on criminal justice issues (www.BetterBallotsNY.org).
