DMI on Driver’s Licenses in the Nation

DMI is in the Nation today, with an editorial by Executive Director Andrea Batista Schlesinger and Director of Research Amy Traub. The piece analyzes how Governor Spitzer took a great idea -- making all New Yorkers, regardless of immigration status, eligible for driver’s licenses -- and managed to turn it into a bad policy which was eventually dropped altogether.

As Amy and Andrea write,

"First, Governor Spitzer shifted course with a nonsensical multi-tiered plan that pleased no one. This week, he reversed himself again, completely abandoning any effort to provide licenses to undocumented New Yorkers. The story of what went wrong is a powerful illustration of what happens when progressive voices fail to speak out for immigration policies that benefit everyone."
