NY Controller critizes MTA fare hike

New York State Controller Thomas DiNapoli has blasted MTA for the proposed fare hike, saying that the agency should at least wait until Spitzer's 2008 budget is announced before raising fares and what emerges of congestion pricing. I'm not sure that DiNapoli has any power to prevent MTA from raising fares, but his report promises to bring well-warranted attention to the situation. Read the Daily News article here.

Hopefully, DiNapoli and other state officials will help encourage MTA to slow down and consider all the possibilities before instituting a fare hike. But if, as MTA claims, it has thoroughly evaluated all the aspects of the situation, let's hope that a fare hike will help to ensure the stability of our public transportation system. I, for one, am all for a higher fare if it means that the subways won't shut down the next time it rains, and that I can access the MTA website if they do...
