All Eyes on Hazelton

Beware, the days of Orwell's dystopic vision of Big Brother everywhere have arrived.

Furtunately, a judge has an opportunity to stave off the day where ordinary folks are forced to police each other for the government.

Today a trial begins about the constitutionality of a local law passed in Hazelton, Pennsylvania. The law tries to turn landlords and employers into immigration agents, and penalizes them for renting apartments to, or hiring, undocumented immigrants. The problem is that these employers and landlords have no training, and no capacity to tell who is and who is not in the country legally. In fact, even trained employees of the Department of Homeland Security make mistakes.

The new law in Hazelton, encourages discrimination against all immigrants, both documented and undocumented. It is a irresponsible attempt to shift the burden of governing and policing to ordinary citizens. It endangers immigrant families. Hopefully, the ACLU will win their case challenging it's constitutionality.
