Going into Labor
The relationship between workers and their employers is all over the news today. From the United Auto Workers allowing GM to offer a buy-out to its workers to DMI Fellow Adrianne Shropshire's op-ed in amNew York, "Valuing City Workers."
On TomPaine.com DMI's Amy Traub takes a look at why some labor unions are supporting the McCain/Kennedy Immigration Bill and its guest worker program.
What unites these articles is they all ask the question: how do we value work in America? What is the relationship between corporations and their employees of all kinds? Will employers remember the old Henry Ford maxim about paying workers enough money so they can afford to buy the product they make, or do they think that American workers can just keep buying their sweatshop-made consumer items endlessly on credit cards? (Well they can for a little while, but not forever). Both Amy and Adrianne also have suggestions on ways government can improve the situation so do join in the dialogue on what we can do to make the system work for working people, immigrants and natives, municipal employees and residents.
