Premium Profiteers

Insurance companies are raking in extreme profits at the expense of doctors, patients, and civil rights. A new study by the Center for Justice and Democracy reveals that the rates 15 leading insurance companies charge doctors for malpractice insurance shot up 120% over the past five years, even though the claims these companies paid out remained flat. The companies took in nearly twice as much in premiums as they paid out in claims over the same period of time. How do civil rights suffer? Proponents of tort "reform" have long claimed that the only way to ease the burden of high malpractice insurance rates was to restrict victims' rights to hold doctors and hospitals responsible for their negligence and errors. The new findings suggest another remedy: rather than taking away the rights of ordinary citizens, why not regulate the insurance industry?
